The first Easter “bunnies” originated from German folktales with hares as the heroes. Rather than burrowing underground, the hare builds its home as a sort of ‘nest’ above ground much like a bird, which gave rise to the common myth that hares lay eggs! The hare, egg, and basket are all symbols of fertility, a theme that has played a central role in Easter celebrations long before the holiday was adopted by Western religions. When the story of Easter traveled to other cultures, the hare was replaced with the rabbit, and the Easter Bunny was born.
